Simple SMTP Settings: To Access Gmail & Email Client (2020)

SMTP Settings: To Access Gmail in Another Email Client

In this article, we are going to discuss the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP mail server). You must understand how they work to add your non-Google email on your gmail account and other messages secure.

The SMTP mail server provide an exchange between your email server and the internet mail server. The Internet mail server relays your emails to your internet mail server. There are some essential things that you need to consider when configuring your server settings for security reasons.

Features of SMTP

First of all, it is a good idea to configure the mail server in such a way that it provides the highest level of security. You should always do this to minimize the risk of spamming by hackers. Many of the SMTP mail server types out there allow you to control the settings so you can set the type of security level that you want.

You can always go for the TLS (Transport Layer Security) type of settings. It provides a higher level of security but with slower response times. Therefore, if you are going to use a TLS server, make sure that your system can handle these settings.

Improvement In Security

SMTP relay server also offers several types of security levels. There is the only authenticated mode, which only requires one IP address per SMTP relay server. There is the multi-author mode, which allows multiple addresses to access the same server at one time. Also there’s user-defined mode, which will enable you to create your security settings.

Another thing that you need to know about the security level of your email server is that they are typically separated into two types. These are the encrypted mode and the unencrypted mode. You should consider what kind of security you want your server to provide.

How It Works

The Transport Layer Security is used for creating encryption keys which are used to authenticate clients that access your network. These keys are used to create a connection between the server and the client. Each IP address contains a unique key, and this is the reason why you need to keep them in different names to avoid being traced.

The authentication mode is usually used to ensure that the mailbox is safe. In this mode, an SMTP relay server does not use the transport layer security. It means that there is no protection mechanism and the data that is being sent is accessible to anyone who knows the IP address.

The other mode is known as the simple script mode in SMTP relay server. This mode uses the TCP transport layer security to authenticate the contents of the message. This mode only works on the TCP transport layer security layer.

The SMTP mail server should be able to accept the process of receiving the incoming request. It is crucial because any hacker would not hesitate to look for an open connection.

If you want your email server to work faster and have fewer problems than average, then you should configure it to use the TLS. You can check what kind of security settings you have set in your mail server. AS a user, you should be able to find the ‘client authorization’data integrity’ settings.

You should check whether these security settings are working well for you or not. You may also need to add a few more security settings to your settings to increase the security level of your mail server.

How To Setup SMTP Mail Server For Sending And Receiving Mails?

It is only meant for sending messages only, and you have to use POP3 or IMAP for receiving mail.

SMTP Server Configuration Settings:

  • Gmail SMTP server address:
  • Username: Your Gmail address for example, (
  • Password: Your Gmail password
  • Gmail Port (TLS): 587
  • SMTP port (SSL): 465

Settings For POP3/IMAP

First of all, you need to enable POP3/IMAP on your Google under settings. To do this follow the step below:

  • Click on the gear icon from the upper right-corner and click on settings from the drop menu
  • Click on the “Forwarding and POP/IMAP from the tab list
  • Enable POP for all mail (even mail that’s already been downloaded or Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on is selected.
  • Choose what you want to happen to mail after it gets downloaded next to When messages are checked with POP.
  • Scroll to the bottom and select Save Changes.

POP Settings:

  • Gmail POP server address:
  • Gmail POP username: Your Gmail address e.g. (
  • POP password: Your Gmail password
  • Gmail POP port: 995
  • Gmail POP SSL required: yes
  • SMTP server:
  • Gmail SMTP Port (TLS): 587
  • Gmail SMTP Port (SSL): 465
  • Require SSL/STARTTLS: Yes
  • Require authentication: Yes

IMAP Settings:

Here are two configuration settings for both Incoming and Outgoing messages.

IMAP Settings for Incoming Server:

  • Gmail IMAP server address:
  • IMAP username: Your full Gmail address (for example,
  • Gmail IMAP password: Your Gmail password (use an application-specific Gmail password if you enabled 2-step authentication for Gmail)
  • IMAP Port: 993
  • Gmail IMAP TLS/SSL required: yes

IMAP Settings For Outgoing Server:

All the Messages are sent using Simple Mail Transfer Protocol settings. It requires these settings to access Gmail with another mail client:

  • Gmail smtp server address:
  • Username: Your full Gmail address (for example,
  • Password: Your Gmail password
  • Gmail SMTP Port (TLS): 587
  • SMTP Port (SSL): 465
  • Gmail TLS/SSL required: yes

This is how how you can successfully create or set up a SMTP mail server or SMTP relay server following the procedure stated above. If you have any question and queries feel free to leave comment below and I will do my best to reply you as soon as possible.
